Construction drawings and shop drawings are both essential to getting a building built, yet they answer different questions, are produced by different parties, and live at different stages of a project. Treating them as the same thing leaves gaps that surface on site as confusion, delay and rework. For anyone commissioning or producing drawings, the distinction is worth getting precisely right.

This article explains exactly what each type is, who makes it, what it contains, and how they work together to turn design intent into something a fabricator can actually build.

Construction drawings: the design intent

Construction drawings, often called GA (general arrangement) drawings or the construction document set, are produced by the design team, the architect and engineers. Their job is to communicate what is to be built: the layouts, dimensions, materials, specifications and overall design intent. They form the basis of the building contract, and they tell every party what the finished building should be.

Critically, construction drawings describe the design, not the means of making it. They show that a steel beam of a certain size sits in a certain place; they do not show the exact plate, bolt and weld arrangement the fabricator will use to connect it. That next level of detail is somebody else's job.

Shop drawings: how it gets made

Shop drawings are prepared by the contractor, fabricator or specialist supplier, not the designer. They translate the design intent into precise, fabrication-ready instructions for a specific element: the exact dimensions, materials, connections and installation method for that contractor's scope. Steel connections, precast panels, curtain walling, ductwork, joinery, all are typically detailed in shop drawings.

How they work together

This submittal-and-review loop is one of the most important quality gates in construction, it is where the gap between "what was designed" and "what will be built" is closed.

A worked example: a steel connection

Imagine a beam-to-column connection. The construction drawings show the two members, their sizes and the design forces at the joint. They do not show the cleat, the bolt grade, the number of bolts or the weld, because the connection design is the steelwork contractor's responsibility. The fabricator produces a shop drawing detailing exactly that connection, submits it, and the engineer checks it carries the design force. Only then is the steel cut.

Skip the shop drawing and the fabricator is guessing at a connection the contract never specified, a recipe for a joint that is over- or under-designed, and a dispute when it shows up on site.

Why the distinction matters commercially

Misunderstanding who produces what causes real problems. A client who expects construction drawings to include fabrication detail will find the contractor pricing for shop drawings as an extra. A contractor who skips shop drawings to save time pushes risk onto the fabrication floor and the site. Clear, well-drafted documents at both levels, design intent from the designer, fabrication detail from the maker, keep the project moving and the responsibilities clean.
